IMATS!!!
I'm currently waiting for my project partner to finish her part of our report so I might as well make a long-awaited post!!
Most make-up junkies and beauty buffs know about IMATS, but for everyone else that reads my blog, I'll fill you guys in a little. IMATS stands for International Makeup Artist Trade Show and it's basically a big exhibition of makeup in different trades. This was my first time at the show so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but I was definitely impressed by the featured artists, mainly the body painters.
I was also pretty excited to see Pursebuzz, but it was cut short since my sister and I arrived late and hadn't been able to go around to see the products. Oh well, maybe next time!!
Elessa a.k.a. Pursebuzz working her magic on a model.
As I mentioned earlier, my sister and I got there late (it was my fault...I kept stalling haha) so we had limited time to look around. But let me tell you, it only took 10 minutes for us to spend around $100!!! I admit, I got a little bit carried away with the sparkly eyeshadows, but check out their website....no makeup addict can tell me that they would walk away when faced with these pretty little eyeshadow pots FOR HALF THE RETAIL PRICE?!?!??! I swear, if I had a credit card or I had withdrawn a wad of cash, I would have bought their entire stock!! The joke is, I don't even know when I'm gonna be using these little suckers!!! But hey, I've got presentations to make, parties to go to...the possibilities are endless!!
I should also mention the movie prosthetic museum that they had. I didn't spend a lot of time there because everything looked so real and it freaked me out, but I did take time to snap a few pictures....
Why hello there, Wolverine's head.
This is what freaked me out so hard....that, and the giant baby head (which I didn't take a picture of, unfortunately)
All in all, it was a pretty productive day....I'll definitely go back for next year's show!!
In the meantime, I'm gonna try to hurry my friend up, cuz I'm super tired and I'm pretty sure this entire post made absolutely no sense hahaha......Goodnight!!

Pacman's a killa
I haven't even watched the fight yet (I know, what kind of Filipino am I?!?!) but for real, I'll rep Team Pacquiao all day every day!!
I really wish I saw this fight live....I remember Hatton going down after 8 minutes, but Cotto went 12 rounds even though his face was all mashed up!! See, that's quality boxing!! Plus Cotto's kind of hot...especially when he's standing next to Manny (no disrespect hahaha).
That's my whole piece....haha. Not much of a post, but hey, it's something. Once school and work dies down I'll be on a posting spree again, I promise!
My boyfriend got a hold of the fight online for me so I'll be watching it on Thursday, screaming like I don't know the outcome....

Chris Brown ft Lil Wayne - " I Can Transform Ya"
I know how most people feel about Chris Brown...but just for like, 5 minutes put the hate on pause and focus on the music. Guilty or not, he still got it...

Drawing A Blank
As I write this I'm undergoing some major writer's block. Well, it's not so much writer's block as it is a creative blank. Being the forgetful procrastinator that I am, I left one of my assignments to the last minute and then forgot about it. It's due tomorrow. MASSIVE FAIL.
I'm glad I got the day off work (holiday shopping won't be starting for another few weeks so I'll probably be getting a lot of surprise days off) to work on this, but for an hour I've literally been avoiding looking at my paper. I think I need some kind of application on my Firefox that blocks websites like Facebook & Twitter from opening until I'm finished my assignment.
The other day I had one of my trademark changes of heart where I feel like I'm out of place in my program and maybe I should just quit. But Cosmetics is where my heart is. It's my passion. I know I want to work in this field for the rest of my life. Haha this is a little odd considering the fact that two years ago I didn't even wear makeup. But something in me changed when I started wearing it. It's like there was something that lit the fire in me. I suppose it's because I'm the only daughter that has zero artistic ability. I can't draw to save my life. So it's nice to think of Cosmetics as "art for the face". It's true though....someone's face is my canvas.
I just wish I was a little more creative. It's hard not to fall into the rut of monochromatic eye colour and plain jane gloss on the lips. I need contrast, I need bright and lively. It's easy to pull those pages out of a magazine but it's another to translate those looks into something I can call my own. I guess it will get a little bit easier as time goes on, I'm only in first year after all, but I want the process to speed up a little.
*sigh*....Oh well.......I'll just keep working at it.....I only have a few hours to finish my project.

Twisted Princess Collection
When I was little I wanted to be a princess. Not just any princess, but a Disney Princess. My favourite princess was Ariel from The Little Mermaid. She was beautiful, brave, and man, could she sing. I think almost every girl loved the Disney Princesses growing up. No matter which princess was our favourite, we all had one thing in common: we wanted to be her. Since then my favourite princess has changed constantly, but I've come to love all of them.
**WARNING: Things get a little bit dark from here, so if you want to keep that squeaky clean image of the princesses in your mind, stop reading NOW**
A week ago the boyfriend & I were coming up with Halloween costume ideas, and he mentioned that he had seen some pictures that he thought would be pretty cool. At first he thought I would be disturbed by them, but he also knows that I have a small fondness for the twisted, bizarre aspects of things. An artist by the name of Jeffrey Thomas (jeftoon01 on deviantart) has come up with a brilliantly horrifying depiction of our beloved Disney Princesses. A few comments on blog sites have reprimanded Thomas for his work but I think these pictures are done extremely well. Through the grotesque imagery, the beauty still seems to somehow shine through.
My favourite from the collection is Sleeping Beauty (Aurora). (Shown below)
Aurora's picture doesn't come with a story (the first ones Thomas drew didn't have stories but the last 6 do), but the image is enough to spark your imagination. Each picture contains little details from each Princess's story that may take a few glimpses to catch. In this particular picture, you can see the three fairy godmothers trapped inside a lamp. Thomas's attention to detail is amazing, at first glance I never noticed that Sleeping Beauty's eyes were actually sewn shut (though that makes sense if you think about it). It's also amazing how much these Twisted Princesses look like their fairytale counterparts. I think that's one of the main reasons I love this collection so much.
You can view the other drawings here: http://jeftoon01.deviantart.com/gallery/#Twisted-Princess (Note: check out the dinglehopper as Ariel's hand. Pretty crazy, huh.)
If you're still in need of a good Halloween costume you can draw inspiration from one of these drawings. I think I might try to go for Sleeping Beauty this year. I initially wanted to try Pocahontas but it's WAY too cold in Toronto to go out in that attire, haha. I'll let you know how it goes.
What do you think of the drawings? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Leave a comment and tell me!

Typhoon Ondoy - Please Donate!!!
On the news lately there's been coverage (full coverage especially on GMA Pinoy TV for those who have subscribed on Rogers Cable in Canada) of Typhoon Ondoy, the tropical storm that has hit The Philippines. Every year the country suffers through terrible storms, but this one seems to be the worst yet. I have family in the Philippines, but so far none of the cities my relatives are in are affected as badly. I pray Ondoy doesn't get to them too. As for the cities devastated by this storm, I pray that things subside as soon as possible. I've come across many images of the flood and more than once these images have brought me to tears. I could never imagine something like this happening in Toronto, and to see the villagers and townspeople lose everything they own makes me so sad. Some of these people don't have that much to begin with, and to lose everything in an instant...I can't even think about how I would react.
This kind of thing really makes you think twice about your own needs. All of the materialistic items I've complained about not having; they don't seem all that important now. This time, I'm hoping for a job, not just to have my own money, but to have something to donate to the victims of this great tragedy. I feel like I owe it to my fellow Filipinos.
To all of my readers, I urge you to donate money to the American Red Cross or Philippine National Red Cross. It's the least we can do to help out.

waking up at 3:30 in the morning ain't so bad when I'm getting paid to do it...
This past Saturday marked my first actual "makeup artist"-esque job. Woke up at 3:30am, and by 4:30am I was nervous but ready to go. Vanessa picked me up to be her wedding makeup "intern", and after a quick stop at Timmy's we were off to the bride's house!
I'd like to say that I was completely prepared for my task, seeing as we had just learned the art of foundations and concealing in class on Tuesday, but the first thought in my head once we stepped into the house was, "How the HELL am I gonna pull this off?" All I had to do was bases, as in, concealing and applying foundation, but I've never used a liquid foundation and it's not like it was practice in my practical class, IT WAS A WEDDING!!!!
I'd like to think I did a pretty good job though, I was particularly proud of how I made one of the bridesmaids look absolutely flawless. I don't mean to offend, but she had a little bit of an acne issue. I completely covered it; that's my proudest makeup moment to date! We only really worked with the bridesmaids since the bride, her mother & her Maid of Honour were done in traditional Chinese wedding makeup. I was really nervous so I couldn't really make conversation, plus it was still 6 in the morning so the event wasn't as social and upbeat as it could have been. I'll get used to that though.
So by 8am we were finished for the day and I went home to sleep for a few hours before Vee came over for our wedding dress excursion.....but more on that in another post.......

Typical...this kind of stuff always happens to me...
Alright, I wasn't planning on writing a blog today but I just feel like I need share this little story with the world!
Today I had one of my professional cosmetics classes, so I lugged my whole makeup kit to school with me only to find out that we don't even use our kits for that class. That wasn't really a big deal though, I only had that one class for the whole day so I didn't mind. I had to sit in the back so it was a little bit of a struggle to shove my kit underneath the counter. We went on with our lesson plan, talked about projects, etc. So far everything sounds like it's going peachy, right?
Well, as soon as class was over and I pulled my kit onto my lap to pack my stuff, I noticed that my thighs were getting cold. WTF?!? So I lifted my bag a little, and I noticed that my pants were SOAKING WET. I figured someone had spilled water or something on the floor because when I looked down I saw this giant puddle where my bag had been sitting. But no, it was coming from inside my bag. The weird thing is, nothing was leaking when I checked my bottles. And as much as I love conspiracy theories, I'm pretty sure nobody in my class hates me (yet haha) so that rules out someone pouring anything into my bag when I left the room. Turns out, it was my eye makeup remover. After careful inspection I realized that there's noticeably less solution in the bottle. But that's ok, there's plenty more where that came from.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go back to drying my supplies....*sigh*....

First Day Jitters
So...for most people it's the 2nd day of school. Technically that applies to me as well, but I don't have class today haha.
My first day was....to be honest, it was pretty nerve wracking. Thank God that Marlon was okay with being awake at 8am when he didn't need to be, haha. I don't think I would've been able to make it if he wasn't on the phone with me. But anyway, the day actually started out pretty bad. The bus that I got on changed route AFTER I got on it. So imagine my surprise as the bus turned onto the highway right after I pulled the wire for my stop! I had my headphones on, but I'm pretty sure the whole bus heard the F word come outta my mouth as the bus was turning haha.
So when I finally get to class (15 minutes late, mind you. Not a good look for a professional makeup artist) I sit down in the front like a keener. I won't go into extreme detail, but my class is actually pretty awesome. I've volunteered to be a model for one of the demos, we'll see how that goes. No makeup going to school...but it's our first class of the day so I'm down with that =)
My business class is pretty cool too. Just a few projects but they don't seem all that difficult to do.
It all seems generally easy for this semester. I think the worst part of anything will be lugging our kits around. But that's what lockers are for, right?
All in all, I don't think school is gonna be that bad.
But ask me again when I'm getting stress zits from homework and projects piling up haha

sorry i've been gone...
Okay so....I tried the beauty review thing, and clearly it didn't seem to pan out. I'll still be doing beauty reviews, but this blog won't be limited to that. I'll be posting anything from youtube videos to songs I like to fashion or makeup trends I love (or love to hate).
It's basically like this: I'm just like any other college student trying to get my shit together before being propelled into the real world.
I've been told I'm quite the storyteller, and I like to keep my stories as detailed as possible, haha. So join me on my fun little adventure through life =)
By the way, I'm really random, so...be prepared for that haha.
P.S. if any of you twitterheads want to follow me, feel free: http://twitter.com/mafargas (my account is private so just dm me or something)

Cover Girl Exact Eyelights mascara
So I'm guessing pretty much everyone has seen the new Rihanna commercial for the new CoverGirl Exact Eyelights mascara, right? Apparently the mascara is supposed to make your eye colour seem about four times brighter.
I tried out Black Pearl (made for brown eyes), but I, having dark brown eyes like most Asians, didn't find my eye colour looking any different than when my lashes were bare. I still very much like this mascara though, it goes on really well and lasts the whole day with minimal smudging. I go for the waterproof formulas to avoid heavy smudging, which tends to happen when I wear mascaras. There was a little bit of clumping going on during application (despite the No-Clump brush), but other than that it goes on great! The wand is easy to handle and though the brush is a little thick it was easy to get to my corner lashes (which I sometimes miss completely haha)
I'm usually one to go for the expensive mascaras at the specialty boutiques, but this is definitely a great find at a reasonable price.
This one may be for the girls with the lighter eye colour though, I'm sure you'll get more bang for your buck!
Already tried it? Let me know what you think and leave a comment!!
CoverGirl Exact Eyelights Eye-brightening Waterproof Mascara: about $6 CDN
